This is a guest post written by the lovely Matt over at World of Matticus. If you don’t read his blog then go subscribe to his feed and then come back, I’ll wait, I promise. Ok, finished bookmarking etc? Here ya go then…

A while ago, I wrote about the different kinds of personalities that every Guild leader needs. One of the characters is the Mom. The player personality of mom goes a little something like this, just in case you’re not aware:

The Mom can instantly sense when something is wrong in the Guild. Her gut feelings are more in tune with the emotions of a player. She knows what to say at the right time. Nothing relieves a tense moment then a calm soothing female voice (that applies in any situation though, really).

Why she’s an asset: She’s able to pry the deepest and darkest thoughts of a player in the Guild. She can silence brushfires with a few tells. She can break the will of even the most devoted gquitter and persuade them to stay one more day. Even though you can’t see it, you can almost see the sad puppy eyes on the screen when she asks you what’s wrong. She’s an excellent sounding board if you need to vent your frustrations because she will actually care.

But not only that!

Although she may not be your average hockey mom or soccer mom, this does not mean her role is any less important. Mom is the kind of player who brings every reagent, potion, and consumable known to man to any raid. If you forget your mana oils, mom’s got your back. If you realize you don’t have any more gold left, mom will slip some gold into your pocket with a wink. Although she doesn’t get up at 5 AM to bust her ass to drive you to games, she’s almost as good.

She is the first person any Guild member goes to when they’re going through relationship problems or girl problems. Don’t even lie. You know I’m right on this. There’s always that one guy whose having problems with his girlfriend who drags himself to officer chat one on one with mom to poor his heart out. Because if it were anyone else in the Guild, he’d gquit and transfer off to avoid the embarrassment. But perhaps the most underlying feature of mom? No matter what we do, she is always there and supportive of us in any way.

Even if we want to quit the Guild.

So the next time you see mom online in your Guild, be sure to give her a /hug and a big thank you for everything she’s done. Count yourself lucky to have one in your Guild at all.

  2. Yeah I have had a “mom” in each guild, we’ve also had a “coach” in each guild. Someone who likes to motivate us on Vent and after each raid we get this speech “Alright everyone, today was some great teamwork and I’m glad you all made it out, although we didn’t down the main boss tonight we made a lot of progression, got some more loot and improved our teamwork, good work everyone and get some sleep so we can do this again tomorrow!” Always with the motivational speeches its priceless lol.
